Slavery existed among all peoples in ancient times, without exception. But the Torah limited the term of Jewish servitude to six years, and thus it says: "If you buy a Jewish slave, he shall serve for six years, and in the seventh year he shall go free without payment." If the Jubilee year falls within these six years, the Jewish slave is freed early.
